Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Guernsey in the Channel Islands in September 1846. The stone pier running east from the Town Church (the building just behind this monument) is known as the Albert Pier. This, together with the North Pier, bounds the "Old Harbour" which now contains the Victoria and Albert Yacht Marinas. Durham's statue is both a landmark and a reminder of the Victorian "energy and vision" that helped shape this part of Guernsey (Greenwood 53). The statue itself is very fine, both in outline and detail, especially with regard to the Order of the Garter costume. It looks like another cast of Durham's statue of Prince Albert in London, which stands on a higher, more elaborate pedestal behind the Royal Albert Hall not far from the Albert Memorial.
